By: Susan Guibert

Meredith Gill, assistant professor of art history at the University of Notre Dame, has published a new book exploring the philosophical and theological legacy of St. Augustine.

"Augustine in the Italian Renaissance: Art and Philosophy from Petrarch to Michelangelo"In “Augustine in the Italian Renaissance: Art and Philosophy from Petrarch to Michelangelo,” Gill traces Augustine’s influence on thinkers and humanists from the 14th to the mid-16th century, and examines his representation in their portraits and painted narratives. The book also explores the intersection of his theological writings with Renaissance aesthetics.

A Notre Dame faculty member since 1998, Gill specializes in the Italian Renaissance, curial patronage, cross-cultural exchange with an emphasis on church decoration, and the religious culture of death and commemoration. She also serves as a faculty fellow in Notre Dame’s Nanovic Institute for European Studies.
